Investigate the role and impact of grandmothers' traditional knowledge on child nutrition in the Banadir region, Mogadishu, Somalia.

Abstract Proper infant nutrition is crucial for child growth and development, impacting long-term health outcomes. This study examines the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of infant nutrition among mothers in Kismayo, Somalia. The research focuses on maternal awareness of proper feeding practices, cultural beliefs influencing infant nutrition, and common feeding behaviors. Using a cross-sectional study design, data was collected through surveys and interviews with mothers attending healthcare facilities. The findings indicate that while many mothers acknowledge the importance of breastfeeding and complementary feeding, gaps exist in knowledge about optimal infant nutrition. Key barriers to proper infant feeding include cultural misconceptions, limited access to nutritional education, and economic constraints. Additionally, some mothers introduce complementary foods too early or too late, impacting infant health. The study emphasizes the need for improved maternal education programs, strengthened healthcare support, and community-based awareness campaigns to enhance infant feeding practices. Recommendations include integrating nutrition education into antenatal and postnatal care, promoting exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and addressing socio-cultural barriers to proper infant nutrition. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, healthcare providers, and organizations working to improve child nutrition in Somalia.
