Ethical Issues in Evidence-Based Medicine Balancing Evidence with Patient Autonomy and the Role of Informed Consent
Evidence-based medicine (EBM) has revolutionized healthcare by emphasizing the use of the best available clinical evidence in making healthcare decisions. However, the implementation of EBM can raise ethical concerns, particularly regarding the balance between clinical evidence and patient autonomy. Informed consent, as a fundamental aspect of medical ethics, plays a critical role in addressing these concerns. This article explores the ethical challenges that arise in the intersection of EBM and patient autonomy, particularly focusing on the role of informed consent. Through a review of existing literature, this paper examines how evidence influences the consent process, the implications for patient choice, and the ethical principles at stake. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for a collaborative, patient-centered approach to healthcare decision-making that respects both the best available evidence and the individual’s values.
