Introducing Flourishing: The Perma Model.
In 1998, standing before the American Psychological Association, Dr. Martin Seligman presented an idea that would change the course of psychology. It wasn’t the kind of idea that fit neatly into the field’s existing frameworks, nor was it aimed at solving the usual problems. Instead, Seligman asked a provocative question: What if psychology didn’t just fix what was broken but nurtured what was best? What if we studied not only how to relieve suffering but also how to cultivate a flourishing life? This wasn’t about chasing happiness as a fleeting emotion. It was about something deeper—a way to unlock human potential. Over time, Seligman’s ideas crystallized into what he would later call the PERMA model, outlined in his seminal book Flourish. This framework distilled flourishing into five essential elements: Positivity, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Achievement.
