Summary. The „Beheading of Saint John the Baptist” church in Vaslui, also known as the Royal Church in Vaslui, was rebuilt from the ground up in 1820 on the site of a church founded by the ruler Stephen the Great in 1490, at the royal court in Vaslui. The church is located in the center of the city, and was included on the List of Historical Monuments in 2015 with the classification code VS-II-m-A-06708.In the framework of the project „Restoration, Consolidation and Tourist Valorization of the Historic Monument Ensemble Beheading of Saint John the Baptist Church and the Archaeological Site Area of the royal courts Vaslui”, P.O.R., we carried out scientific research on the nature of the materials in the structure of the painting from the carpentry in the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist from Vaslui, in order to authenticate. Identifying the techniques and materials involved in making a painting requires interdisciplinary knowledge for the correct interpretation of analytical data. The results of the research obtained by using optical microscopy and XRF and FTIR-ATR spectroscopy techniques to establish the nature of the pigments, the preparation layer and the technique of making the icon painting brought important information on the basis of which the art historian and the restorer could formulate conclusions in order to restoration. The examination of the painting and the data obtained from the analyzes led to the conclusion that the painting was made in the oil technique. The application of pigments in the original painting was done in successive layers, from dark colors to light colors (flashes). The preparation layer for the icons is based on gypsum and in flat polychromy based on chalk.Key words: dating, painting, OM, XRF, FTIR-ATR, pigments1
