BUFFERING THE BURDEN: SOCIAL SUPPORT AND MENTAL HEALTH DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected multiple dimensions of life in the Philippines, including economic stability, physical health, and, most critically, mental well-being. With over 1.4 million confirmed cases and more than 25,000 deaths reported as of July 9, 2021, the virus has imposed an enormous burden on both the healthcare system and the general population. The psychological toll of the pandemic has been particularly severe among healthcare workers, who face heightened workloads and continuous exposure to health risks, making healthcare institutions high-risk environments for mental distress. This study explores the growing incidence of anxiety and psychological distress experienced by Filipino healthcare professionals and patients amid the pandemic. Drawing parallels with findings from previous health crises in countries such as Albania and Germany, where similar trends were observed, the study emphasizes the universality of mental health vulnerabilities during pandemics. Research from those contexts indicates that both frontline medical personnel and patients exhibited elevated levels of stress and anxiety, a pattern mirrored in the Philippines' ongoing crisis. The urgency of identifying and addressing the psychological needs of affected populations is underscored, particularly in light of the high emotional demands placed on frontline healthcare workers. By understanding the extent and nature of the mental health impact of COVID-19, this research aims to inform the development of targeted psychological support systems and coping interventions. These are vital not only for the immediate crisis response but also for strengthening long-term resilience within healthcare settings. Ultimately, the findings advocate for a proactive and integrated mental health strategy within the Philippine healthcare system—one that acknowledges the emotional toll of pandemics and prioritizes the psychological well-being of those most at risk.
