Are Dyson Spheres Actually Good SETI Targets?

Dyson spheres have been a target of multiple searches for interstellar technosignatures. However, there is reason to believe that the assumptions underlying the need for Dyson spheres are the product of a very specific sociocultural circumstance, and not a universal pattern in civilizations. I will explore the logic behind Dyson spheres, alternative perspectives on civilization and energy demand, and what this means for the search for technosignatures.

Abstract

Dyson spheres have been a target of multiple searches for interstellar technosignatures. However, there is reason to believe that the assumptions underlying the need for Dyson spheres are the product of a very specific sociocultural circumstance, and not a universal pattern in civilizations. I will explore the logic behind Dyson spheres, alternative perspectives on civilization and energy demand, and what this means for the search for technosignatures.
