Exploring the Impact of ChatGPT on English Writing in 9th Grade Students: Perspectives on Enjoyment, Anxiety, and Self-Efficacy,
In our article, which contained 8,034 words, we show that ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, can be used to improve students’ writing skills. Our study lasted 12 weeks and was conducted during the 2023 fall semester in Taiwan, with 683 EFL 9th grade students serving as participants. All students were selected from 24 classes matriculating at four public middle schools, three located in central Taiwan and one in southern Taiwan. They were selected using a nonrandom snowballing sampling method, ensuring that the students were closely matched for age and English proficiency levels. Upon finishing the gathering of data, we administered three assessment inventories: 1) an eleven-item self-report scale, adapted from the Chinese Version of the Foreign Language Enjoyment Scale; 2) a five-item self-report scale, adapted from the anxiety subscale of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire; and 3) The General Self-Efficacy (GSE) Scale. Using structural equation modeling, we showed that AI can be used in the classroom to increase student enjoyment and self-efficacy, while lowering feelings of anxiety, leading to an enhanced learning experience.
