Challenges and Control of Weedy Rice in Rice field
Weedy rice (Oryza sativa f. spontanea) is a troublesome and aggressive form of rice that behaves like a weed in cultivated rice fields. It is closely related to domesticated rice (Oryza sativa), making it particularly challenging to distinguish and control. Weedy rice competes directly with cultivated rice for light, nutrients, water, and space, often resulting in significant yield losses and reduced grain quality. Weedy rice typically exhibits characteristics such as early shattering, red pericarp (seed coat), strong seed dormancy, and higher plant vigor compared to cultivated varieties. These traits contribute to its persistence in rice fields and its ability to survive traditional weed management practices. It can arise through several pathways, including natural hybridization between wild and cultivated rice, de-domestication of cultivated rice, or contamination through seed dispersal.
