Optimizing Thrust Block Design and Construction in Water Transmission Networks: A Specification Revision and Two-Stage Construction Strategy

Conventional thrust block design in water transmission pipelines is rooted in highly conservative assumptions aimed at ensuring stability. However, this approach often results in oversized concrete structures, longer construction durations, and impracticality in confined corridors. This study introduces revised specifications based on risk-adjusted design categories and a staged construction method. The goal is to optimize thrust block size while upholding structural safety, particularly under tight shutdown schedules. The engineering assessment involved 24 design cases across varied pipe diameters, pressures, soil types, and groundwater levels. Results indicate that the revised approach significantly reduces both cost and volume, improving constructability and efficiency.
