D3.3: Project requirements, platform architecture and KPIs

The InterPED project aims to revolutionize the concept of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) by fostering energy sector integration, demand-side flexibility, and citizen engagement while maximizing the use of renewable energy sources (RES). This deliverable, D3.3: Project Requirements, Platform Architecture, and KPIs, outlines the methodologies, requirements, and architectural principles necessary for achieving these goals, providing a strong foundation for subsequent development and deployment phases. The report highlights a five-step methodology for designing the InterPED platform, focusing on PED analysis, KPI definition, service development, tool integration, and platform interoperability. The platform architecture emphasizes compliance with leading frameworks like SGAM (Smart Grid Architecture Model) and COSMAG, ensuring modularity, scalability, and interoperability. Additionally, it integrates emerging technologies such as cloud-based microservices, real-time analytics, and OpenAPI standards to support robust energy solutions. Four diverse pilot sites in Spain, the UK, Switzerland, and Romania serve as testbeds for validating the platform's feasibility across varied geographies and energy systems. Each pilot addresses unique objectives, such as optimizing energy self-consumption, enabling life cycle cost analysis, and fostering active community participation in demand response strategies. The platform's key innovations include a modular architecture supporting real-time data ingestion and analytics, cross-vector optimization for energy management, and tools for user-centric engagement. Over 35 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were defined to evaluate technical, financial, environmental, and social impacts, ensuring a comprehensive assessment framework. By integrating lessons from prior EU projects and aligning with international energy standards, this deliverable sets the stage for the development of an interoperable, scalable, and sustainable energy ecosystem that facilitates the transition to decarbonized PEDs. This document serves as a cornerstone for subsequent technical development and validation efforts, paving the way for widespread adoption of PED concepts across Europe and beyond.
