LACUNAE IN LITERARY TRANSLATION

In the modern world, the interaction of cultures is not only limited to the expansion of contacts and the emergence of new information but also contributes to each other's development. However, it often also increases misunderstandings and disagreements. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly important not only to learn foreign languages but also to understand and study the culture of the people who speak those languages. Literary translation serves as a connecting link between language and culture, making it essential to prioritize its cultural specificity. Modern translation theory views communication as an exchange of information between people who speak different languages and belong to different cultures. In literary translation, there are certain words and expressions that cannot be directly translated from one language to another. These lexical units are referred to as lacunae. Lacunae represent instances where specific concepts or expressions in one language have no equivalent in another. This phenomenon stems from the unique characteristics of language and culture, posing challenges for translators. Lacunae exist due to various factors, including cultural differences, historical development, geographical conditions, social structures, and other elements.
