Ghost Mode: A Web-Based Digital Detox Platform for Promoting Mindful Technology Use
Abstract—In today’s hyperconnected world, excessive screen time has become a pressing issue, contributing to reduced productivity, digital fatigue, and mental health challenges. Despite the availability of screen monitoring tools and restrictive applications, users often find it difficult to maintain long-term digital discipline. This paper presents Ghost Mode, a Django-based web application designed to promote mindful technology use through self-initiated digital detox sessions. Unlike traditional restrictive methods, Ghost Mode focuses on voluntary participation and encourages users to take control of their screen habits through a minimal, responsive web interface. The system enables users to initiate detox sessions with custom timers, view motivational prompts during the session, and engage in reflection. The application architecture leverages Django’s model–view–controller pattern and includes core functionalities such as session initiation, state handling, and user feedback. Future enhancements aim to integrate session tracking, progress dashboards, and gamified rewards to further engage users. The proposed platform offers a practical, accessible, and scalable solution to promote healthier digital behavior among students and working professionals.
