EVALUATION OF THE THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL OF PHYTOCHEMICALS ON ROTENONE-INDUCED PARKINSON'S DROSOPHILA MODEL
ABSTRACTParkinson's disease (PD) is a brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination. Symptoms usually begingradually and worsen over time. As the disease progresses, people may have difficulty walkingand talking. Drosophila melanogaster has been used as a model for several neurodegenerativediseases, including a model of PD. Here, we studied the neurodegenerative and behaviouraleffects of exposure to rotenone in Drosophila. After seven days, the treated flies presentedcharacteristic locomotor impairments. Adding Gallic acid and Chlorogenic acid into the feedingmedium rescued the behavioural deficits. The neuroprotective effects of some polyphenoldietaries can be potentially useful for the treatment aspects of PD in Drosophila and provide anew in-vivo model for studying the mechanisms of dopaminergic neurodegeneration.
