Evolution of Women's Style: Bollywood's Cultural Influence On Indian Society (1950 - 2000)
The renowned American fashion designer Carly Cushnie famously said, "Life is too short to wear boring clothes." This sentiment underscores the profound impact fashion has on our lives, and in this context, the textile industry plays a crucial role in shaping the ever-evolving fashion market. In Maharashtra, the cotton textile industry has been a cornerstone of economic growth since the pre-independence era. Alongside the textile sector, Mumbai's thriving film industry has also been instrumental in preserving and promoting culture. As a powerful medium of mass communication, Hindi cinema, or "Bollywood," has not only provided entertainment but has also shaped and reflected the evolving identity of modern India in ways that few other art forms could achieve. One of the most significant influences Bollywood has had on Indian society is in the realm of fashion, where it has helped define and popularize styles that resonate with the masses. Fashion in Bollywood, particularly as portrayed by leading actresses, has an artistic and aesthetic dimension that has deeply influenced cultural and social trends, especially among women. My study will conduct a qualitative analysis of the fashion trends depicted in Hindi films from 1950 to 2000, focusing on how the styles adopted by Bollywood icons were embraced by women in Mumbai. Additionally, this research will explore the socio-economic implications of these fashion trends on society. Key Words: Fashion, Textile Industry, Bollywood, Cultural Influence, Socio-Economic Impact.
