Characterization of MWCNT and B4C Reinforced AL 8011 Metal Matrix Composite via the TAUGHI Method.
This study presents a detailed characterization of aluminum 8011 (Al 8011) metal matrix composites reinforced with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and boron carbide (B4C) particles, fabricated using a stir casting technique. The investigation employs the TAUGHI method, a comprehensive analytical approach designed to correlate microstructural features with mechanical and tribological performance. The addition of MWCNTs and B4C significantly improved the mechanical properties of the Al 8011 matrix, as demonstrated by increased tensile strength and hardness measurements. Wear resistance tests conducted under dry sliding conditions revealed a considerable reduction in material loss compared to the unreinforced alloy. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) analyses confirmed a uniform dispersion of the reinforcements within the matrix and a strong interfacial bond, which are critical to the enhanced load transfer and wear resistance observed. The TAUGHI method enabled a systematic evaluation of the relationship between reinforcement content, microstructure, and composite properties, identifying an optimal reinforcement level of 3 wt% for achieving a balance between mechanical strength and wear performance. The results suggest that hybrid reinforcement with MWCNT and B4C can effectively tailor the properties of Al 8011 composites for advanced structural and wear-critical applications.
