Born in a town called ‘Valaiyaraku’ in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, V. Seenithambi is a highly skilled Koothalamai. He transcended the social hierarchy in Batticaloa in the early 20th century and created excellent Koothalamai. If he went to a town to practice Koothalamai, he would stay for three months and hand over the responsibilities, then go to another town to practice Koothalamai and teach the procedures for it, and then go back to the town where he first practiced Koothalamai, practice it and perform. In those days, it took more than a year to train a Koothalamai. Without considering anything, he taught Koothalamai’s dance, singing, dance form, and talakatta from the basics. He was seen as a doctor and a person who knew all the procedures of Koothalamai. This study provides information about the Koothus that emerged from his Koothupani, the places where Koothu was trained and raised, the Koothu he practiced, and the way he raised Koothu despite oppression.
