A Comprehensive Digital Twin Framework for Proactive Operation and Maintenance of Wind Turbines

This proposal outlines the development of an integrated digital twin framework that transforms the operation and maintenance (O&M) paradigm for wind turbines (from reactive to proactive) by integrating real-time, preprocessed sensor inputs (including vibration, strain, and guided stress wave data) with advanced control strategies. In addition to simulating structural behavior via a physics-based finite element model (FEM), the framework will incorporate operational control mechanisms such as pitch control and structural control via magnetorheological (MR) dampers. Coupled with advanced simulation tools (OpenFAST and ANSYS Workbench), rigorous mathematical models, AI-driven prognostic modules, and an interface powered by a Large Language Model (LLM), the system anticipates early signs of damage and adjusts operational parameters to optimize both performance and maintenance. This proposal details the software tools, mathematical formulations, and integration methods employed, clearly contrasting our proactive strategy with traditional reactive approaches.
