Governance, Security and Cross-Border Migration in Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari (2015-2023)
This paper examined the nexus between governance, security, and cross-border migration in Nigeria during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration (2015–2023). Utilizing Everett Lee’s Push and Pull Theory, the paper analyzed the factors driving migration within and beyond Nigeria’s borders. The paper highlighted how insecurity, economic instability, and governance challenges have acted as push factors, compelling individuals to seek better opportunities elsewhere. Conversely, the pull factors, including perceived stability and economic prospects in neighbouring countries, have influenced migration patterns. The study also explored the implications of Nigeria’s security policies, border management strategies, and regional cooperation efforts on migration flows. Findings indicated that despite the administration’s commitment to strengthening border security, issues such as terrorism, banditry, and economic hardship continued to fuel irregular migration. The paper concluded that addressing the root causes of migration requires a holistic governance approach that integrates security reforms, economic development, and regional partnerships.
