Project Sono Aegis: Deploying DAS-Equipped "Guardian" Fiber-Optic Cables to Protect Submarine Communication Cables and Pipelines

Project Sono Aegis offers a proactive way to protect submarine communication cables and pipelines from anchor dragging, fishing gear, and other external threats. It uses Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) on a specialized “guardian” fiber cable laid near high-risk routes, acting like an early-warning tripwire. When anchors or equipment disturb the seabed, the DAS system detects and pinpoints these vibrations in real time. Operators are then notified—giving them a critical window to intervene before major damage occurs. This approach is far more cost-effective than repairing a severed cable or pipeline and helps ensure continuous global connectivity, energy security, and reduced environmental risk.
