Prevention of endocarditis among dental patients with cardiovascular diseases
Abstract: Endocarditis poses a serious threat to patients with cardiovascular diseases, especially in the setting of dental treatment, which can lead to bacterial infection. The purpose of this article is to analyze current approaches to the prevention of endocarditis in this group of patients. The risks associated with invasive dental procedures, the pathogenesis of infective endocarditis, and recommendations for antibacterial prophylaxis are reviewed. Special attention is given to standards proposed by international associations, including the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the American Heart Association (AHA). Data on antibiotic choice, timing of antibiotic use, and duration of course are provided. For maximizing patient safety, importance of a multidisciplinary approach, including close collaboration between dentists and cardiologists is emphasized.
