The role of peace communicatio in conflict resolution in Africa
Abstract Peace communication plays a crucial role in conflict resolution, fostering dialogue, reducing tensions, and promoting sustainable peace. This study examines the role of peace communication in conflict resolution in Somalia, focusing on the effectiveness of communication strategies in mitigating conflicts and fostering reconciliation. The research evaluates the impact of media, community dialogues, and diplomatic efforts in facilitating peacebuilding initiatives. Using a mixed-methods approach, data was collected through surveys, interviews, and case studies involving key stakeholders, including policymakers, community leaders, and media professionals. The findings indicate that while peace communication has been instrumental in reducing violence and fostering understanding, challenges such as biased media reporting, political influence, and lack of access to credible information hinder its full potential. Additionally, the study highlights the role of traditional elders and local mediators in facilitating constructive peace dialogues. The study emphasizes the need for enhanced media training, community engagement programs, and stronger institutional support for peace communication efforts. Recommendations include promoting conflict-sensitive journalism, increasing investment in grassroots peace initiatives, and strengthening policies that support inclusive dialogue. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, media professionals, and organizations working to enhance conflict resolution through effective peace communication in Somalia.
