Design and Development of a Voice-Activated Smart Vending Machine for Multilingual Public Access using Raspberry Pi
This paper presents the design and development of a low-cost, voice-activated smart vending machine that supports multilingual interaction and operates fully offline. Built using Raspberry Pi 4B, servo motors, ultrasonic and IR sensors, the system is designed to serve public access points such as schools, rural areas, hospitals, and public service centers. The innovation eliminates dependency on touchscreens or mobile applications by integrating offline speech recognition through the Vosk API. The machine responds to voice commands in regional languages like Tamil and English, ensuring accessibility for users of varying digital literacy. Automated item dispensing is managed through a sensor-controlled servo mechanism. This project was developed by the team at ADER Smart Systems, an Indian startup focused on accessible automation. The system is modular, energy-efficient, and scalable — making it ideal for deployments under government initiatives, public-private partnerships, and CSR projects. The paper details the architecture, working mechanism, cost analysis, and future potential for integration with payment gateways and inventory monitoring systems. With a total prototype cost under ₹3,500, this system demonstrates the viability of inclusive automation solutions using open-source technology and affordable components.
