PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT ON LEARNERS' PARTICIPATION IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND ITS EFFECT ON HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT: BASIS FOR AN INTERVENTION PROGRAM

The general objective of the study was to examine the extent of parental involvement in learners’ participation in extracurricular activities and its effects on holistic development, serving as the basis for an intervention program. To achieve this, the study sought to answer several specific sub problems. First, it aimed to determine the extent of parental involvement in learners’ participation in extracurricular activities, focusing on three key areas: attendance at the events, volunteerism and, communication and advocacy. Second, the study examined the status of a child's holistic development in terms of academic performance, social skills and relationships, and physical health and well-being. Additionally, it investigated whether there was a significant effect of the extent of parental involvement in learners’ participation in extracurricular activities on child’s holistic development. The study further explored the perceived effects of parental involvement on a child’s holistic development, specifically regarding academic performance, social skills and relationships, and physical health and well-being. Lastly, the study identified the challenges parents encountered in their involvement in the extracurricular activities of learners and proposed potential interventions based on the results. The research employed a descriptive-correlational approach, utilizing quantitative surveys to gather data from parents and teachers. Findings revealed that parental involvement significantly influenced various dimensions of children's development, including academic performance, social skills and relationship, and physical health and well-being. Specifically, attendance at the events and volunteerism emerged as critical factors in fostering children's engagement in extracurricular activities. Despite recognizing the positive impacts of their involvement, parents reported challenges such as time constraints, financial limitations, and communication barriers that hindered their participation. The study underscored the importance of enhancing school communication strategies, providing logistical support, and creating inclusive environments to facilitate greater parental involvement. Recommendations were made for school heads, teachers, parents, DepEd officials, and future researchers to promote effective collaboration and support systems that contributed to the holistic development of learners. The study concluded that increasing parental engagement in extracurricular activities was vital for nurturing well-rounded children who could thrive academically, socially, and physically.
