Quantum Computing Access Facilitation And Learning Today
Quantum computing holds immense promise for achieving computational gains once thought unattainable given the physical limits to classical compute resources. Certain classes of problems could benefit greatly from exponential speedups obtainable from the exploitation of the principles of quantum mechanics. In this presentation, we will consider the advantages of integrating quantum computing into current research computing activities, various realistic strategies for doing so, and approaches to facilitating educational opportunities, including access to emulation, simulation and QPU (quantum processing units) resources. The majority of discussion will center on sharing current approaches and experience in this space, and brainstorming new ideas and methodologies to ease the inclusion of the exciting and paradigm-changing quantum computing technologies into student and researcher environments. Dr. Torey Battelle earned her BA in Physics from Middlebury College, and her PhD in Applied Physics from Colorado School of Mines (Mines). She developed her technical skills in high-performance computing (HPC) with a postdoc at Mines, and gained valuable leadership experience as Assistant Director of Research Computing. During her journey, she has made significant contributions in a variety of computational fields; her publications range from quantum information theory to the evolution of fission products in UO2 nuclear fuel pins to thermoelectric semimetals. Dr. Battelle currently serves as Associate Director, Quantum Collaborative in Arizona State University's (ASU) Research Technology Office. (The Quantum Collaborative is a collection of universities, industries and national laboratories driving the advancement of quantum technologies.) She leads the Quantum Collaborative's quantum computing steering committee in several exciting research directions, facilitates quantum technology-related exploration in quantum sensing, communication and networking, and connects with industry and university partners in crucial workforce development efforts. Recently named Interim Director of High-Performance Computing, she has added quantum-centric HPC to her pursuits. Dr. Battelle is honored and thrilled to join LAOP-QubitHUB's direction in strengthening the impact of quantum computing on societal challenges.
