Transformational Mentorship as a Leadership Tool for Enhancing Faculty Development in African Theological Institutions.
Abstract Faculty development is essential for the sustainability and effectiveness of theological education in Africa. However, many theological institutions face challenges such as leadership succession gaps, faculty retention issues, and limited professional development opportunities. This article explores transformational mentorship as a strategic leadership tool for enhancing faculty development within African theological institutions. Based on biblical principles and contemporary leadership theories, transformational mentorship promotes institutional commitment by inspiring faculty members to develop holistically and, in turn, mentor others. The study provides an overview of transformational leadership, mentorship, and transformational mentorship, highlighting the role of faculty development in enhancing professional capabilities and leadership succession. Additionally, it examines the challenges and opportunities associated with faculty development in African theological institutions, shaped by resource constraints, sociopolitical realities, and the need for culturally relevant education. Likewise, the article explores strategies for establishing transformational mentorship as an institutional culture, advocating for structured mentorship policies, dedicated time and resources, and financial investment in mentorship training workshops. Furthermore, the paper discusses how transformational mentorship can serve as a leadership tool for faculty development in African theological institutions. It demonstrates how this approach fosters leadership development, spiritual maturity, academic excellence, and ministerial competence. Adopting transformational mentorship will enable African theological institutions to develop stronger leadership succession and increase the quality and impact of theological education across the continent.
