The effects of floods on environment in beledweyne-somalia.
ABSTRACT Background: Flooding is a big natural occurrence that has a substantial impact on human endeavors' financial and ecological aspects. It is obvious in highly developed and low-lying areas, especially where almost no care was given to and there was no legal arranging in the development of frameworks. Objectives: the study was based on the effects of floods on environment in Beledweyne Somalia and the basic objectives of the study that includes the causes of constant flooding in Beledweyne district in Somalia, the effect of Socio-economic of floods in Beledweyne district Somalia and the existing coping mechanisms in place to curb the negative impacts of River flooding. Methods: The study used a descriptive research design, targeting 50,410 respondents in Somalia's Hiran area, with a sample size of 400 respondents, using simple random sampling and questionnaires. Result: Beledweyne, Somalia shows a positive correlation between constant flooding and socio-economic factors, emphasizing the need for sustainable development strategies and mitigation to address environmental challenges. Discussion: The study reveals that poor drainage infrastructure in Beledweyne, Somalia, worsens flooding due to lack of community awareness about flood risks and heavy rains. This leads to water accumulation, inundation, and prolonged standing water. Conclusion: The study suggests a combination of structural solutions, community participation, sustainable land management, climate resilience techniques, flood control infrastructure, and efficient drainage systems to mitigate heavy rains and flooding. recommendations: Implement Sustainable Land Management Practices: Encourage sustainable land management practices such as reforestation, soil conservation, and agroforestry to enhance soil stability, reduce erosion, and improve water retention capacity.
