A Review On Plants Having Anthelmintic Efficacy

Background: Bangladesh is endowed with abundant medicinal plant resourcesand traditional medicinal practices. However, available research evidence onindigenous anthelmintic plants are highly fragmented in the country. The presentsystematic review attempted to explore, synthesize and compile ethno-medicinalresearch evidence on anthelmintic medicinal plants available in Bangladesh. Methods: A systematic web search analysis and review was conducted onresearch literature pertaining to medicinal plants used for traditional helmintictreatment on worldwide.. Data were collected from a total of 134 differentstudies meeting specific inclusion criteria including published research articlesand unpublished thesis reports. Relevant ethno-botanical/medicinal informationusing descriptive comparison, percentage, tables, and bar graphs. Results: Analysis of ethno-medicinal recipes indicated that mainly fresh leaveswere used for preparation of remedies. Decoction, concoction andeating/chewing were found to be the most frequently employed herbal remedypreparation methods. Conclusion: The study highlighted different indigenous anthelmintic medicinalplants with equally divergent herbal remedy preparation and use pattern onworldwide. Likewise, herbal remedy toxicity risks and countermeasuresgenerally entailed more exhaustive investigation. Experimental research andadvanced chemical analysis are also required to validate the therapeutic potentialof anthelmintic compounds from promising plant species.
