Women's Role in Financial Decision-Making in Ancient India

Abstract: The role of women in financial decision-making in ancient India is a topic of significant historical and cultural importance. Despite the patriarchal structures that dominated ancient societies, Indian history and scriptures reveal that women held critical roles in managing wealth, property, and economic activities. This paper explores secondary sources, including Vedic texts, historical accounts, and archaeological findings, to understand women’s involvement in financial decision-making. It examines their roles as household managers, landowners, traders, and patrons of charitable activities, highlighting their economic independence and influence within familial and societal structures. By revisiting this historical perspective, the paper sheds light on how these roles evolved over time and their relevance in contemporary discussions on gender and finance.
