System Theory Analysis of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC): Implications, Challenges, and Policy Recommendations for Socio-economic Transformation

This study analyzes the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) using Systems Theory and qualitative data from literature and 15 expert interviews. Initiated under the strategic vision of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC), CPEC includes 21 energy projects (17,000 MW, 67% complete), major infrastructure upgrades (25% complete), nine Special Economic Zones (38% under construction), and Gwadar Port development. These initiatives enhance energy access, trade, and industrial growth. However, political instability, terrorism, institutional weaknesses, and environmental risks pose significant challenges. Proactive security and governance measures have improved coordination and investor confidence. The study concludes that managing systemic interdependencies, strengthening institutions, and ensuring sustainability are essential for CPEC’s long-term success.
