Methodological Note: Vulgar Viewing of Video as [Instruction]
In Ethnomethodology's Program (2002), Garfinkel shows a keen interest in reexamining "instructions" as an ethnomethodological topic. Here, [instructions] does not refer to the class of speech acts that explicitly describe activities for recipients to follow. Rather, it concerns to the paralinguistic 'following' that adheres to the phenomenal field properties of procedurally accountable, ordered appearances of signs and indications, which constitute our perception of ordered appearances as things. This technical note eloborate the two rendering theorems that 'govern' the rendering relationship between [instruction] and [instructed action], as a methodological basis of our self-reflexive video ethnography in Au-Yeung & Smith (forthcoming) on the police's video about the shooting of Adam Toledo.
