Effects of Grammar-Translation Method on Learners' Understanding and Motivation

Classical Teaching Method plays a key role to improve learners’ comprehension and develop their motivational level. This study looked into how GTM affected the reading motivation and understanding of the students at Government Higher Secondary School Chamtar, Mardan. A quasi-experimental research design was used in the study. Twenty-eight students from the engineering science class and twenty-eight students from medical science class were selected to serve as research participants. Both the reading pre and post-test tests, and the questionnaire were used to gather data. After that, SPSS version 20 was used to analyze the data using one-way ANOVA. The findings demonstrated that GTM significantly affects students' motivation to read and their understanding level as well. As it is concluded that GTM has more positive effects on learners’ understanding and reading motivation level therefore, it is recommended that GTM may be used by English Language Teachers in teaching.
