Various approaches for the reuse and utilisation of wood products and corresponding approaches in Europe

Paper presented at the International Conference "Carbon benefit linked to sustainable forest management: Education, Research and international integration". Vietnam National University of Forestry (VNUF). 14.-15.11.2024, Xuan Mai, Hanoi, Vietnam Abstract: Produce, consume, dispose - many economic value chains follow a linear model. In contrast, the bioeconomy aims to create closed-loop systems in which as few materials as possible leave the cycle. This is achieved through the multiple use and further processing of natural raw materials and wastes, or their complete recycling. Biomass, a key resource in the bioeconomy, is not only renewable but also ideally suited for sustainable use in closed-loop systems. This includes both material use and composting. At the end of the chain, biomass can also be used for energy. Bio-based loops offer potential in areas where organic raw materials are already in use and enable the development of bio-based alternatives to conventional materials and processes.
