The role of Sharia law in international environmental governance.
Abstract This thesis investigates the potential contributions of Sharia Law to the evolving framework of international environmental governance. It moves beyond the notion ofa monolithic "Islamic environmental law" and instead examines how core Sharia principles and interpretations can inform and strengthen international environmental efforts. The analysis draws on key passages from the Quran and Sunnah, evaluating them through the lens of environmental stewardship and the concept of Maqasid al- Sharia (higher objectives of Islamic law). It explores the applicability of Islamic legal tools and reasoning to contemporary environmental challenges. Additionally, thethesis examines the potential of Sharia to bridge cultural divides and foster broader participation in international environmental governance.
