"Hart ducha" opiekunek ochronek Macierzy Szkolnej w Gdańsku (1919-1939). Wychowanie przedszkolne w trudnych czasach
„Fortitude” of the babysitters of the Polish Educational Society’s nurseries in Gdańsk (1919- 1939). Preschool education in difficult Times The article focuses on the organization of work, the curriculum and the conditions that prevailed in the Polish Educational Society’s (Polska Macierz Szkolna) institutions in Gdańsk during the second Free City of Danzig (1919-1939). The main sources cited and analyzed by the author are the well-preserved handwritten diaries of the nursery school in Sopot from 1931-1939 and the Gdańsk archives. The diaries are kept in the Gdańsk Library of the Polish Academy of Science and have not yet been thoroughly discussed in the form of an article. The establishment of the first nursery schools in Gdańsk and in the surrounding area, their organization and division into secular and religious institutions, were recalled. Attention was paid to the activities of the outstanding figures, including teacher Kunegunda Pawłowska (1885-1945). The analysis of Sopot’s diaries provided a detailed social and religious cross-section of parents of the attending children. The facilities and care program were very popular among Poles, as well as people of other religions and nationalities. The role of the nursery schools and their help in raising the minors was invaluable for workers in the Free City of Danzig.
