Bridging environmental and economic impact assessment frontiers in Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD)

This abstract summarises the ongoing work of the EU-funded ANALYST project, presented at the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD24) Conference, 10-15 November 2024, hosted by Empa - Technology and Society. The project aims to advance the SSbD framework, focusing on the development of methodologies and guidelines that prioritise safety and sustainability within industrial practices. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, the project leverages advanced analytical techniques and sustainability assessments to evaluate materials and chemicals, aiming to reduce environmental impacts whilst ensuring economic feasibility. A comprehensive review of current practices and technologies benchmarked against global standards reveals significant gaps and opportunities for improvement in impact assessments across diverse industries. The findings underscore the importance of integrating environmental and economic considerations early in the design process and set the stage for further exploration into the social dimensions of sustainable development.
