THE POWER OF PROVERBS IN FAIRY TALES. A STUDY OF RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH FOLK TALES

This article explores the significant role of proverbs in Russian and English fairy tales, examining how these succinct expressions of folk wisdom function as both narrative devices and vehicles for cultural transmission. Through comparative textual analysis of classical fairy tale collections from both traditions, this research identifies patterns in proverb usage, thematic content, and pedagogical function. Findings reveal that while both traditions employ proverbs as moral anchors, Russian tales tend to embed proverbs more explicitly as didactic elements, whereas English tales often integrate proverbial wisdom more subtly within narrative structure. This cross-cultural comparison demonstrates how proverbs in fairy tales reflect distinct cultural values while simultaneously serving universal functions of encapsulating moral lessons and societal norms. The study contributes to understanding how folkloric elements transcend entertainment to function as important instruments of cultural socialization and ethical education.
