Telecommunications and Innovation: A Global Study of Broadband, Telephone, and Mobile Cellular Access
This study investigates the relationship between access to broadband, telephone, and mobile cellular services and innovation in 190 countries from 2000 to 2018, using data from the World Bank. The analysis employs both Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and fixed effect regression methods and examines the influence of a country's income level on the observed correlation. The findings of this research reveal a positive and robust association between communication infrastructure and innovation. Two potential explanations are explored: (i) increasing marginal benefits of broadband deployment and (ii) the creation of positive externalities that indirectly boost innovation. Notably, these positive effects are consistent across countries with varying income levels.
