THE ROLE OF SOCIOLINGUISTIC COMPETENCE IN SOCIAL AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS
Sociolinguistic competence-the ability to use language effectively and appropriately in various social and academic contexts-plays a critical role in the social and academic success of middle school students. This competence enables students to navigate different social interactions, build peer relationships, and excel in academic settings by adjusting their language use according to the context and audience. The article explores the significance of sociolinguistic competence, highlighting its impact on students' social integration, group work, classroom participation, and academic performance. It also discusses the importance of fostering these skills in middle school learners to promote both social and cognitive development. Educators are encouraged to implement strategies such as role-playing, peer collaboration, and explicit instruction on language registers to help students develop strong sociolinguistic competence, ultimately supporting their success both in school and in broader societal contexts.
