Numerical analysis of aortic valve dynamics in patients with supravalvular aortic stenosis
Abstract: Supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS) is characterized by a narrowing of the ascending aorta, which leads to abnormal blood flow dynamics, altered heart valve function, and a significant pressure gradient across the constricted region. The study of SVAS presents considerable challenges due to the complex fluid-structure interactions between blood flow and the mobile valve leaflets, as well as the intricate geometry involved. In recent years, mathematical modeling and computational simulations have emerged as valuable, non-invasive, and cost-effective tools for predicting various patient-specific cardiovascular conditions. This investigation aims to develop a sophisticated computational modeling approach to quantify the trans-stenotic pressure gradient and elucidate aortic valve dynamics in SVAS. The fluid-structure interaction simulations between blood flow and the aortic valve are conducted using an in-house solver based on a diffused-interface immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method, enabling a comprehensive analysis of this complex cardiovascular pathology.
