Energetics of (super)tidal baroclinic modes in a realistically forced global ocean simulation [Software and Dataset]

This data set is based on a JGR paper with the same title: Buijsman, M. C., Abdulfatai, M., Arbic, B. K., Chassignet, E. P., Hiron, L., Shriver, J. F., et al. (2025). Energetics of (super)tidal baroclinic modes in a realistically forced global ocean simulation. Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 130, e2025JC022460. https://doi.org/10.1029/2025JC022460 This repository contains the following: The time-mean and depth-integrated kinetic energy (KEs), available potential energy (APEs) and eastward (FXs) and northward (FYs) pressure fluxes for 5 vertical modes for a 4-km global HYCOM simulation (expt_19.0). The energy terms are computed for 5 frequency bands: (1) diurnal, D1, (2) semidiurnal, D2, (3) terdiurnal, D3, (4) quarerdiurnal, D4, and (5) higher harmonic, HH (2.15-12 cpd). The eigenspeeds (CEs) are also included for the 5 modes, as well as the HYCOM grid coordinates, water depth, grid angle (pangs), and sampled cell surface area (AAAs). To speed up the modal diagnostic calculations and minimize storage, the tripole grid is reduced from nx=9000 and ny=7055 to nxs=4500 and nys=3527 (every other grid cell is used; a fourfold reduction in number of points). These data are used to make several figures as explained in readme_MATLAB_FORTRAN_codes.pdf. The data used to make Figures 1 and 6 is combined in .tar files. The SSSH data used for the frequency-wave numbers spectra in Figure 8 are in separate .nc files. These files also include all the related grid parameters. The Matlab codes that are used to make the paper's figures are in matlab_codes.tar. Additional Matlab functions that are called in these codes, can be found here: https://github.com/maartenbuijsman/matlab-funcs. The Fortran codes that are used to process the raw model data on the US NAVY supercomputers are in fortran_codes.tar. The readme file that describes the Matlab and Fortran codes is readme_MATLAB_FORTRAN_codes.pdf.
