Teaching Strategy for Nursing Training on the Safe Use of Infusion Pumps

Objective: To stimulate the development of competencies required of professional nurses in caring for patients using infusion pumps. Product typology/stratification: Professional training course. Subtypology: Development of training activities created and organized at different levels. Rating T2 = 75 points. Protected by Creative Commons license CC BY 4.0. Method: Intervention study, with a quantitative and qualitative approach, developed using the problem-solving methodology. The research was approved by the CEP under reports: 6.643.114 and 6.716.638. Results: The training course “Safe use of the infusion pump in infusion therapy” was developed in seven stages: Pre-Test; Problem Situation; Survey of problems; Discussion of professional competencies; Lecture; Post-Test; and Evaluation of the teaching strategy. In the face-to-face model, it lasts four hours. Based on the teaching strategy used, the nurses identified the problems based on the situation presented and critically discussed the professional skills needed to care for patients using infusion pumps. With regard to the evaluation moments, the average number of correct answers in the pre-test was 2.0 points and in the post-test 3.5 points, out of a total of 5.0 points. And positive feedback on the teaching strategy applied, through the evaluation form. Conclusion, applicability and impact: The use of a problem-solving teaching approach in training nurses proved to be effective in discussing professional competencies related to patient care using infusion pumps, enabling critical-reflective thinking and technical-scientific knowledge about the technology. This approach helps to bring professionals closer to the technology, so that the knowledge built goes beyond the transmission of operational information. However, its implementation requires time and institutional coordination to ensure professional engagement and high impact. The applicability of the strategy is possible once the problem-solving methodology has been mastered and it can be adapted to different themes, proving to be relevant and up-to-date in the health scenario.
