The Human Rights crisis in the Contemporary World

On 22 February 2025, Dr Pablo Banchio delivered a pivotal lecture within the framework of the Peace & ADR – International Law/Human Rights seminar series, organised by the International Association of Mediators and Poly-Experts (IAMPE) under the leadership of President Kristine Arzumanova. This seminar series convened distinguished scholars and practitioners to explore the intersections of peacebuilding, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), and the evolving challenges of public international law and human rights protection. Dr Banchio’s lecture, titled "The Human Rights Crisis in the Contemporary World: Origins, Challenges, and Perspectives" provided a comprehensive analysis of the structural and geopolitical factors shaping current human rights crises. He offered a critical examination of historical trends, systemic injustices, and the erosion of fundamental rights across various regions. A key focus of his presentation was the ongoing genocide in Palestine, which he unequivocally condemned as an act of state terrorism, holding the Israeli government accountable while also denouncing the complicity of the United States and the passive acquiescence of the European Union. Furthermore, he contextualised these violations within a broader global framework, addressing the humanitarian crises in Sudan, Artsakh, and the persecution of the Rohingya people. Beyond diagnosing these crises, Dr Banchio’s intervention underscored the necessity of a renewed international commitment to human rights. He advocated for stronger multilateral cooperation, the revitalisation of international institutions, and the development of legal and ethical mechanisms to ensure the protection of vulnerable populations. His emphasis on alternative dispute resolution and mediation as tools for justice and reconciliation resonated with the broader objectives of the seminar. This paper presents a brief summary of Dr Banchio’s lecture, offering an in-depth exploration of these urgent human rights issues. His analysis not only reflects the gravity of the present challenges but also invites critical engagement with potential solutions. By addressing the intersections of law, ethics, and global governance, this contribution serves as a call to action for scholars, policymakers, and advocates committed to the defence of human dignity in an increasingly complex world.
