Sustainable Aquaculture: Medicinal Herbs as a Water-Friendly Solution

Abstract Water has been a fundamental resource for aquaculture for centuries, ensuring global food security and economic growth. However, modern aquaculture practices such as the overuse of antibiotics and synthetic chemicals, have led to prominent environmental challenges such as water pollution, antibiotic resistance, and ecosystem degradation. Thus, to address these issues, medicinal herbs offer a sustainable alternative by enhancing fish immunity, reducing disease outbreaks, and improving water quality. Herbs such as garlic, turmeric, and neem possess antimicrobial, immunostimulant, and bioremediative properties that help mitigate the negative impacts of modern aquaculture. Integrating phytochemicals into fish diets can reduce reliance on synthetic treatments, minimize water contamination, and promote ecological balance. This paper explores the historical evolution of aquaculture, the present challenges it faces, and the future potential of medicinal herbs in ensuring sustainable fish farming. Herbal-based aquaculture represents a promising approach to balancing food production with environmental conservation for future generations
