Precisión del vernier en la selección de pacientes candidatas a labioplastia: una revisión de las evidencias actuales
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to remodel the female external genitalia, restoring the labia minora to their natural size and appearance. By employing various techniques, it addresses morphological alterations and size imbalances without compromising functionality. To ensure precise, symmetrical, and aesthetically pleasing results, the Vernier caliper is the ideal measuring instrument. Therefore, a literature review was undertaken to assess the studies conducted within the last decade regarding the precision of the Vernier caliper as a measurement tool in the selection of candidates for labia minora reduction surgery. An exhaustive search was directed in various electronic databases: PubMed, Elsevier, SciELO, Google Scholar and Redalyc, from 2015 to 2024, using search terms in English, Portuguese and Spanish, such as "Vernier", "Labiaplasty", "Labia minora reduction", in DeCS/MeSH, to select scientific articles or other academic documents. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, out of the seventy initially reviewed articles, four from the study period were selected as partially relevant to the topic of Vernier accuracy in selecting candidates for labiaplasty; only one mentioned the Vernier as a precision tool in labia minora reduction surgery. This study concluded that more research is needed to demonstrate the accuracy of the Vernier caliper as a measurement tool when assessing patients; the results of different labiaplasty techniques are inconclusive, as the availability of a standardized measurement instrument for the labia minora is unknown.
