Effect of Discovery Method on Interest in Ecology Concept among Senior Secondary School Students in Zaria Metropolis, Kaduna State.

The study adopted a Quasi Experimental research design Specifically, pretest and posttest research design. The population of the study consists of 465 (Male,70 And Female,48) senior secondary school class two (SSII) Biology students during the 2023/2024 academic session among public schools in Zaria metropolis, Kaduna state, a sample size of 118 (70 male and 48 female) students were selected from the target population using multi-stage sampling technique. Two research questions and corresponding null hypotheses guided the study. Ecology Interest Questionnaire (EIQ) was validated by experts and reliability coefficients using Pearson product moment coefficient (PPMC) was found to be 0.76 using test-retest Method. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while independent T-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that students exposed to discovery strategy have high interest scores than those students exposed to conventional method of teaching and the research also showed that female students have high interest scores than their male counterparts when exposed to discovery strategy of teaching. The study conclude that there is significant difference in the mean interest scores of the SSII students taught ecology concept using discovery method and those taught that same concept using conventional method of teaching in favour of experimental group. The study recommended that Biology teachers should use discovery strategy of teaching while teaching ecology so as to improve students’ interest during the teaching and learning process.
