Impact of Channel Provisioning Strategies in the Transient Resiliency of SuperC+L-band Networks
Optical networks are a key building block of today's telecommunications infrastructure. As fundamental limits in spectral efficiency are getting closer, there is a renewed need to cater for more spectrum in these networks to meet the ever-growing capacity requirements. A cost-effective way to achieve this while relying on the existing fiber infrastructure is to exploit the SuperC+L transmission band. However, in these systems, the impact of power transients on the resilience of established services can be significantly higher. This paper introduces a framework to design and simulate the operation of a wideband optical network and to estimate the impact of power transients. Simulation results obtained on a reference transport network highlight the impact of the selected channel provisioning strategies on the resiliency of established services to power transients, providing insight into the trade-off between aggressive (optical margin) provisioning and reduced service impact of transients.
