Potential of Marker-Assisted Selection in Rice
Modern rice breeding has been entirely reshaped by marker-assisted selection (MAS), which makes it possible to select for desired traits quickly, accurately, and economically. Recent advances in MAS technology as they relate to rice are thoroughly addressed in this article, with a focus on advancements in marker discovery, QTL mapping, and integration with next-generation sequencing. We go over current practices, difficulties encountered in real-world breeding situations, and potential future developments, particularly the integration of MAS with gene editing and genomic selection. Recent findings (2023–2024) that highlight the growing precision and efficacy of MAS strategies—which are essential in tackling yield constraints, disease resistance, and climate change adaptation in rice cultivation—support the review.
