Microbial Time Bomb
This is a review article. This study documents the potential risks of ancient pathogen release due to thawing permafrost in arctic regions. Through a review of recent cases (e.g., the 2016 anthrax outbreak in Siberia) and scientific findings on revived viruses (e.g., Pithovirus sibericum), we highlight how climate change may unlock biological threats frozen for millennia. Our analysis suggests that permafrost thawing could act as a “microbial time capsule,” with implications for global health systems. We further discuss mitigation strategies, including pathogen surveillance and climate action. This research underscores the urgent need for interdisciplinary collaboration to address emerging threats from Earth’s past.
