Embryonic Vulnerability Windows to Pesticide Toxicants in Rat Model
Embryogenesis in rats features critical windows of heightened sensitivity to toxicants, notably during the pre-gastrulation (gestational days 0–6) and organogenesis (gestational days 6–15) stages. Pesticide exposure during these key developmental phases can lead to embryotoxic and teratogenic effects through mechanisms such as oxidative stress, enzyme inhibition, endocrine disruption, and altered signal transduction. This article highlights the temporal vulnerability of embryonic development in rats, emphasizing how metabolic activation of pesticides intensifies toxicity during periods when embryonic detoxification capacity is limited. By elucidating the interplay between developmental timing, metabolic processes, and molecular disruptions, the article underscores the importance of identifying critical windows for effective risk assessment and regulatory oversight in safeguarding reproductive health.
