IIIF and GAMS Projects: Peter of Poitiers' Compendium Historiae as Example

The DFG–FWF-funded project “History as a Visual Concept” (Grant DOI: 10.55776/I6133) explores Peter of Poitiers’ twelfth-century diagrammatic work, the Compendium historiae in genealogia Christi. Within the scope of the project, the first (digital) edition of the Compendium historiae is being developed in the GAMS digital repository. Given the image-heavy nature of the edition, one of the key standards employed is the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF). In our presentation at the workshop IIIF in/and Digital Scholarly Editions—jointly funded by the FWF project, CLARIAH-AT, and the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW)—we demonstrated how IIIF is implemented within the GAMS infrastructure and specifically how it is applied in the digital edition of the Compendium historiae. In that context we also discuss some aspects of "distributed editions" and we highlighted the possibilities enabled by IIIF, as well as the limitations we encountered.
